I've gotta say I've out of the loop with the NBA happenings as of late, but this came as a total shock to me. But good for Kerr. I've always enjoyed watching him, listening to his analysis and I think he could do some big things for Phoenix.

QUOTE
Steve Kerr will be announced as the new president of basketball operations and general manager of the Suns within the week, an NBA source with knowledge of the situation said. Mike D’Antoni will keep his title as executive vice president of basketball operations in addition to his coaching duties.

The source said current vice president of basketball operations David Griffin will decide tonight whether to stay with the Suns or take a similar position with the Grizzlies. The Suns want Griffin to stay and would probably give him a raise and another title. Griffin would also keep a lot of the duties for which he is currently responsible.

Kerr’s move into the front office would take a lot of the strain off D’Antoni who is not only the Suns coach but an assistant for Team USA.

Kerr is currently a minority owner in the team and a close friend of Suns owner Robert Sarver

A five-time NBA champion and 15-year veteran as a player, Steve Kerr, returns to the organization where he began his professional career.

Kerr was the Suns’ second selection in the 1988 NBA Draft (50th overall) after a four-year career at the University of Arizona. He is the league’s all-time leader in career 3-point field goal percentage, with a .454 mark (726-1599). He played his rookie season in the NBA with Phoenix in 1988-89.

Kerr won three NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls (1996, 1997 and 1998) and was a member of two San Antonio Spurs NBA championship teams (1999 and 2003). Kerr, who retired after the 2002-03 season, appeared in 910 regular season games, averaging six points, 1.8 assists and 1.2 rebounds per contests.

This past season Kerr was an NBA analyst for Turner Sports and worked in the Spurs broadcasting booth.

Kerr, who was born in Beirut, Lebanon on Sept. 27, 1965, earned his degree in general studies from Arizona in 1988.

He and wife, Margot, have three children, Nicholas, Madeleine and Matthew.

is it just me, or do i just think this move will just backfire? i haven't a clue on kerr's past experience with the front office, all the evidence that gives kerr the best shot at the job in this article was just he was a minority owner, he's roberts boy, do i smell a hook up? sure having a GM who has won a lot is great, but IMO, from what i've seen during TNT broadcasts on kerr's colour commentary, i'd pray.

the suns have a busy offseason ahead of them, they want to get some cap space, they don't want to pay guaranteeded money to draftees they don't need. it could be thomas + a first for an expiring contract, or just ship out marion for some expiring contracts.

What you're forgetting is that he's not going in alone. He's got a team that already built for now and the future. He has enough guys in the head office around him that he won't be able to pull any "Babcock" moves just because (Well he's not stupid) but also because there are great basketball minds in that organization. It like getting a rookie who you know will be something great in the future, but for now you have to help them along, and thats exactly what I see happening in Phoenix.

Its hard to judge if a rookie GM will do well or not, because there is nothing us as fans can base that on.

He is coming into a good situation. Phoenix has a legitimate chance of possibly winning a championship. It is tough for a lot of GMs coming into new situations but the "easy years" that Bryan Colangelo set up should be enough to teach him the ropes. It wouldn't be too difficult coming into Phoenix, for the most part, you could sit back because of the big three, there would be work but not nearly as much as the average new GM.

What's going to be interesting about this is seeing how Kerr manages the suns ballooning cap figure and the moves he makes to win a championship before Nash retires, while not financially hamstringing the organization. He already has 3 huge contracts and maintaining a strong supporting cast with free agent casualties moving forward will take the kind of eye for talent that BC is renowned for. It won't be entirely foolproof

^That's what I want to see too. I mean Sarver dosen't like to spend too much either. Kerr has to make at least one decesion on one of his higher paid players. He will be tested early on.

So the Suns went from having Jerry and Son manage the team brilliantly for the past few decades and now they have Steve flippen Kurr running the show?

Steve Kerr as the GM of the Suns seems fine. He knows his crap and it's not like he has to go in there to overhaul things. They've got Stoudemire, Marion and Barbosa inked to long term deals while Nash has two years left on his. Unless he makes a major trade, which I doubt, then they'll more or less be the same team the next two years. Also, I guess it pays off to buddy up to a billionaire, eh?

Also, the two white guys that hit open jumpers that Michael Jordan gave them are GMs of two of the best organizations in the league (Paxson with the Bulls and Kerr with the Suns) while Jordan's only got a say in personnel decisions on the lowly Bobcats. The moral of the story is practice those jump shots!

Good move i think. Kerr is a rookie, but he has Colangelo, and Dantoni advising him. I think he is going into a good situation where he can be mentored for a while.

At first he'll probably need some help with how to deal with the chise financially, but i think he will learn soon.

if they dont move the matrix then Steve Kerr should try to move Diaw and Banks those guys probly take up a chunk of there cap space, they move Amare or Matrix I think that a mistake the suns are entertaing that brings Phx $, what be bold is moving Barbosa but hes apart of ther future.

I don't think trading Banks would solve their cap situation but trading Diaw would be a better move than trading Marion. I believe that without Marion, Nash is losing his most deadly option. Marion shoots it from out and consistently gets 20 and 10. On a fast break the reason the Suns are so deadly is because Nash running and giving it to Marion is always perfect. I think Diaw is overrated. He's good but at the same time he's not somebody you can't depend on regularly. Nash-Marion-Stodemire combo is deadly.
