I just get killed online, ok not exactly (6-6) but i haven`t even hooked it up since I got smoked by some kid useing the lakers...radmanovic with 72 points 24 three balls...kobe...4 points...

I would still recommen 2k over it easily. It just has better gameplay that feels more like actual basketball. Also because Live still has some issues like the players apparently teleporting forward on defense when they shouldn't and guys still shooting from behind the net and randomly running out of bounds.

So far, from what I've read on this topic, the 2k series is without a doubt better then NBA Live, right? If that's the case, I've got a few questions. I've been a very loyal Live buyer (NHL, NBA...) and every year I read/hear the same reviews... 2k has a better dynasty mode (which is a must have for me), but Live has a much better gameplay. At the end of it all, I know what I'll be getting from Live in terms of Dynasty mode, so if the gameplay is clearly better then 2k, I always end up with the Live series. So here are my questions:
1. Is the 2k series gameplay honestly as good as the Live series?
2. What is it about the Dynasty mode in 2k that makes it so much more complete then Live?
3. And finally, why is 2k so cheap in price compared to Live? This may sound funny, but I actually think I'm getting a better game if I'm paying more for it (only for games, lol).
BTW $lip, what made the 07 Live game so brutal? I personnally have it and although it could have been a better overall game, I found it half decent. Is it because I'm missing out on something much better (2k)?
Raptorforlife88
Oct 9 2008, 11:42 PM
I'm going to tell you right now that it's not the franchise mode or anything that makes 2k better. It is just purely the gameplay. 2K is far ahead of live as far as replicating real basketball in video games. It has a better sense of the speed of the game and the little things. Especially around ball handling and setting plays and whatnot. That's what all the reviews has said for the past 3 or 4 years about live vs. 2k. Download the demo of 2k9 and you'll see what I'm talking about. And I'm not sure 2k is cheaper anymore. It was before but I think the prices are about the same now aren't they?

Correct, 2K is 57.95 + tax which comes out to about 65 and change, while Live is 59 and some change, comes out to about 67 including tax. I've been a major Live supporter over the years, but everyone keeps mentioning how good the 2K series in basketball is, and so I went with 2K this year for 09, and oh man. Like RFL88 said, the gameplay can't get any better. It's actually as if you're watching a real game. The other day I was playing it, and my brother walks in and asks me "The Raptors' season started?" Lol, I'm not even kidding. The only bad thing about 2K imo is the soundtrack, but that doesn't really matter.
Oh and BTW, in Live 07, the most annoying thing was HF'ers...you could just run up and dunk on ANYONE at ANYTIME and that got really, really annoying. It was more of an arcade game.

Ok, so if the gameplay of 2k9 is actually better then Live, how are they in comparison with the Franchise/Dynasty mode? You can laugh at me, it's ok, I just have lots of fun of managing a franchise from top to bottom. From scouting players all over the world, to trading/signing/waiving/developing players, to hiring you're entire staff, to tweaking team chemistry for the better or for bad... I love doing that stuff. I don't care about online because I live in the middle of nowhere. And I can't really download the 2k9 demo with dial-up because by the time it'll be completed, 2k10 will be out.

Last year it was solid for 2k9 and it takes into account a lot of different things like player ambitions (older players might want to play for champ contenders, younger ones want money). It has Bird Rights now in the game for contracts. The standard Franchise/Dynasty fare, with a few unique points basically. I'm pretty sure it's at the same level as live as far as Franchise mode is concerned.

For 2K, you can all of that stuff in The Association(Franchise mode). You can send your scouts out and scout players, and I think even before the season they have where the Draft eligable players are projected to go and they change as the season progresses. You can hire your own staff, I'm going to fire Smitch after this season. Check out his line: OFF: B DEF: C TEACH: D Potential: C. He likes to run, doesn't like to crash the boards, etc. As for developing players, you can do that too by putting in practices and concentrate on one player, or the whole team. You also have 3 Hours of development practice for a certain player and you have to complete certain objectives to attain the attributes. Team chemistry in franchise for 2K is awesome. Mine is at 35% right now lol, because my starting lineup is:
PG: Conley
SG: Mayo
SF: M. Williams(Hawks SF)
PF: Chris Bosh
C: Jermaine O'Neal
With Bargs, Kapono, Ukic, Ronnie Brewer, Diagu, Humph, etc on the bench. 13-8 So far on the season.
Chemistry goes up once the players play more games together obviously, and another cool feature is the "NBA.com" section. It's your source for headlines, rumors, stats, standings, etc. just like in real life. You can also assign players roles, such as Starter, Role Player, Sixth Man, Bench Warmer, etc. And depending on how good the player is, he can be named the star of the team, such as Bosh for my team. It's also got Morale and Fatigue ratings, etc. Some players try to avoid certain teams lol.

The serious games are where it's at...and the PS3 and XBOX are about equal right now, but give the PS3 time and it'll become the clear cut winner...they didn't take longer to release it for nothing, the PS3 is the better console for later on, while XBOX is better right now IMO because of the amount of games it has.

I bought a Wii and I personnally love it. You're right that the selection of games are limited (as of now) but it's only a matter of time before they expand it. It all depends on what type of gamer you are. I'm very interested in trying out the new NHL 2k9 on the Wii, although the ratings have been fairly low for all three consoles, I give the Wii a big thumbs up for their outside of the box approach.
As for PS3 vs. Xbox 360 debate,
excluding online play, I think I'd give the edge to Sony because of the blue ray. Maybe I'm not too up to date with my facts, but I also heard that the 360 was going to come out with a blue ray aswell (if they haven't already). And if that's the case, then you're right back to a dead heat. The deciding aspect for me would ultimately be the price of the console... isn't the 360 miles ahead in that category?
BTW, I'm sure I'm a minority when I say this, but graphics are way too overrated.

2k9 is pretty amazing Moneyball, I picked it up a few weeks ago, and it is as frustration as it is impressive.(to quote one kid i played @this game is so frustrating it would make a puppy punch a nun with a kitten@) Its the kind of basketball game that will spank you when you treat it like a video game...For example are you the kind of player who tries to double team the ball handler for quick steals? not a great idea, the computer will find the open man if he is on the strong side....same with double teaming the post...if you double down from the strong side wing or the top of the key the computer will kick the ball out for wide open jumpshots. If you control the man defending the PG and get a little to eager with the steal button the computer will blow by you(or you`ll get called for the reach. You really have to play the game useing the same principles you would use in real basketball. If your slow to help out you draw a foul, or the offence will blow by you.
The first week or so I really felt I had made the wrong choice between live and 2k...I was getting blown out by the computer(on PRO!) and struggled to stop anything that the computer did. defence in 2k9 is as tough as any basketball game I`ve played before. but the flaws in the defence are acceptable realistic....for example I started my season with the raptors...so watching PGs blow by Jose at will adds to the realism of the game. Defence is tough but the more I i use sound defensive strategy the better my defence becomes...I'm at the point now where, I feel like good defence is possible I just suck at it right now.
@The association@ is thick, I haven't tried NBA Live 09, but I had 08 and 2k9 is, at worst, a little more involved then that. Your expected to manage the personalities of your players, along with their defined team roles to control your teams chemistry. You can control your players development, your teams scouting(both scouting your own players as well as your potential draft picks) and manage your teams coaching staff. All the standard franchise options are there. in FA signing and resigning your players will opt out of their player options to test the free agent market, you compete with the rest of the league to sign free agents, finally your not the only team making bids on players.
The game isn't perfect by any means but its darn good. things like the the post game wrap up and half time show sets it apart from Live IMO. having the freedom to check out all the replays after the game adds to the ovrl enjoyment of a game played.
I think I'll say the the cons thus far are the defence which is maybe a bit to hard and gives too much of the benefit of the doubt to the offence, as well as the slowly animated jump shots...you just can't take a jump shot off the dribble..I mean you can but the games animations take too long to set6 your player up and they become the easiest shot in the world to block, so if your playing against a human or against a tougher computer level, you need to make sure your WIDE open when you start your jumpshot.
And right now the online gaming is TERRIBLE!! there are no lobbies, take forever to finally get a game...and that may involve your PS3 freezing multiple times while you try. the game play and feel online is completely different then offline....there is lagging issues that 2k says they are working out. so jumpshots that were slow offline are pathetic online. you can't time your shots properly, due to the lagging i imagine, freethrows are pure luck. basicly Online games are, who can get the most inside shots. Yao ming and the Rockets are impossible to beat. I've played 6 games online Ive only won once. I even got beat by a kid who picked the raptors and took a timeouts to do bong hits.......yea I need a little work....
I'm not sure how much I'll play it online if its going to be like that...I don't mind the losing, but if your only option on offence is to pound it down low or look for deep threes I'll get much more out of the game offline.

just started Fallout..very impressed so far...i particularly like the 30/40's music that's played in the background...gives the game a very unique feel..occasionally you'll hear an old radio show ( i think his name is Derry Dashwood ? ) playing during the game..the character sounds exactly like J. Peterman from Seinfeld
the range of freedom is pretty amazing so far and my only complaint would be that the fighting feels a little clunky....the graphics are outstanding ( although a little dark at times ) and the sound is very good as well
i can see myself spending a lot of time in this world over the 6 or 7 days
here's a full review.....

When I first bought my Wii, I thought "damn it, look at all these childish games compared to what the PS3 and the 360 has to offer", but right now, I've completely changed my opinion. Already, the Wii is coming out with COD-World at War, NFS Undercover, NHL 2K9, along with the consistently awesome mario games (Kart, Galaxy...). Obviously you're not going to have the same depth of game on the Wii compared to the other consoles (and graphics aswell), but it's nice to know that the Wii's coming out with more then just nintendog and puzzle games. The one game however that I'm dying to play and that I know will never come out on the Wii is GTA 4, which is too bad.

picked up Gears of War 2 yesterday but i've been unable to play it due to the fact that my girlfriend has been monopolizing the console for the last few days
she's been playing Fable 2..and i must say it's outstanding
i'll write a review for Gears when i get a chance
if anyone is undecided about which game to pick up first ( Fallout of Fable )...i'd recommend Fable 2 ( just my personal taste )...both are amazing games

So I've seen the latest screenshots for the latest Tomb Raider game. They seriously made her butt more detailed than her face. It took the next gen graphic just to do that lol

Tomb Raider is beginning to edge on soft porn lmao
I've played the older Tomb Raider series hope this one is good. My lil bro just bought it and will be playing it soon

You buy a 360 it will eventually breakdown & you will get 3 red rings & send it in to xbox.Wait 2 weeks for a box. Then get it backed fixed within 3 weeks then it will eventually breakdown again then you will do the same routine.Just buy a PS3.Ps3 has no problems & is loaded with more features than a 360.Ps3 will do the job for you in days, months, and years.I have a ps3 & have no problems. The Playstation Network will update you with news on the server & everything.(if you choose to play online)
LOL this is something I hear over and over and over and over. The Xbox is a pile of junk. Breakdown almost a surety. That alone would disqualify from a purchase.
I have the Wii and am happy with it. Wouldn't mind a PS3 but I wouldn't buy a machine that has such horrible reliabilty no matter what games are played on it(XBOX).
Same reason that I always buy Japanese cars --reliability. No wonder GM etc. are always at the trough looking for dough --they produce junk.

just finished Gears of War 2 and all i can really say about it is...Awesome
if you liked the first then you'll love the 2nd..to be honest there is not a lot of difference when it comes to overall gameplay, graphics etc etc..just a few minor tweaks here and there when it comes to weapons, cover and revival systems ( which makes the gameplay much more balanced..particularly the multiplayer mode )
one of my favourite changes is in Melee attacks...the signature chainsaw move has been adapted so you cut upward from the crotch if you approach from the rear ( freakin hilarious )
oh and btw...they have left it open for a third if they wish to do so
highly recommend picking this game up !

Just got my Wii modified for 100 bucks. Got 15 free games and every other game after that is only 5 dollars, pretty great deal. The 15 games I got for free have a value of well over 200 dollars.

I love mortal combat. I played it years ago, and I've never seen it again since.
