LOL this is something I hear over and over and over and over. The Xbox is a pile of junk. Breakdown almost a surety. That alone would disqualify from a purchase.

I have the Wii and am happy with it. Wouldn't mind a PS3 but I wouldn't buy a machine that has such horrible reliabilty no matter what games are played on it(XBOX).

Same reason that I always buy Japanese cars --reliability. No wonder GM etc. are always at the trough looking for dough --they produce junk.

No that's actually very misinformed. They used to have a serious problem with breaking down but have since fixed the problem. If you buy one after last year, Aug 24th it is almost assuredly not going to break down. If you buy the even newer ones (some recent date this year) then they are even less likely, to the point of almost being able to say never. Also, the PS3 was having problems with breaking down too so it isn't perfect. My buddies laser stopped reading discs, and that had him send it back to repair it...for 190 bucks. Almost the whole cost of a new PS3. Much better.

I love mortal combat. I played it years ago, and I've never seen it again since.

if you really liked Mortal Kombat then i suggest you take a look at this one.....

it's been awhile since i posted anything here, so i thought i'd give everyone an update of a game i've been anxiously waiting for.....

the graphics and sound appear to be top-notch....and the casting of Mark Hamill ( my fave Joker voice ever ) and Kevin Conroy ( Batman ) is a sheer stroke of brilliance imho
i'm keeping my fingers crossed that the quality of gameplay matches everything else i've seen and read about so far

have a look at the update and be sure to check out the trailer...enjoy

I spent 1000 bucks on my computer a year ago, built it from scratch, its more fun when you decide what to put in it. There's never a good enough time to buy a computer, since everything advances almost exponentially in technology and specs. But its got a Diamond Radeon 1080P graphics card and it has dual core 2.66 GHz processor, with 2 x 250GB Seagate HardDrives, 2 GB of Ram on a Gigabyte P35 motherboard. Its pretty solid for a year ago, lol I can get this exact PC for like 7-800 bucks today.

Its able to run Crysis, which is a pretty graphically defined game, but I'm not a hardcore gamer, I still have my PS2 but I'm not buying PS3 until this economy totally crashes and things become dirt cheap. I still play some of the old games, like I emulate nintendo games like original Megaman games.

My favourites are: Age of Empires 2 + expansion, Crysis, Grand Tourismo 4, GTA San Andreas, Halo3 (I don't own a 360), NBA 2K7. I choose not to get into Call of Duty or Counter Strike cuz from what I hear, those games are addictive as hell and I dont need any more of my valuable time spent on shooter games.

I agree with the last poster, the best games are still on PC
cHop-sTicKs
Its a bit true. I built my comp from scratch too, which needs upgrade sooner or later. At the same time though I grew up playing consoles and the exclusive games on PS3 interest me.

So when you got Consoles and PC. There is no way you can get bored.

came across some info that i found very interesting the other day and wanted to pass it along to all the game fans here at RC...i had no idea this was in the works...

seems DC has a huge MMO game coming out either late 2009 or early 2010...from what i can gather it's simply called DC Universe Online

totally interactive and you have the capability to create your own Superhero or Villian...what impressed me most was the fact that Jim Lee is directly involved in the project
you have the choice of playing in either Metropolis or Gotham...both maps look incredibly well done !

this looks like it could be a blast to play...check it out

I've got a question for all you gamers out there... is the PS3 worth the extra $$$ compared to the Xbox360? I don't really care for the blue-ray player, so that has little value to me (at this point in time). The thing that I really like about the PS3 is that it's compatible with my PS2 games... I wouldn't have to keep my old system hooked up if I ever want to play my old games (which happens once in a while). I don't know, are the graphics from the PS3 considerably better, or is the difference insignificant (which is what I've been told)?

I also heard that the Xbox has a lot more games to choose from, is this true? What about the controls, are they both pretty easy to get used to? Keep in mind that I'm a sports gamer first (NBA, NHL, NFL) and everything else is secondary (although I would absolutely love to play the new GTA 4).

Graphics are without a doubt insignificant, with many places saying games are looking at working better on the xbox to this point. Either way, it is really so minor in one direction or another to not matter.

Way true. Basically, people had more time to prepare for the xbox because it came out earlier that they started with it, and have had more of an opportunity to prepare for it and prefect it. It also means that games that take a longer time are finished first for the xbox. A lot of games now are being offered for both systems. Best idea is to look at games only offered on each system and see which of them is best.

Electronic Arts: We've Maxed Out the Xbox 360

Speaking to the media at E3 last week, Patrick Soderlund, Senior VP of EA Games Europe, said that the Xbox 360 has been "maxed out," but PlayStation 3 hasn't been.

"I do think that we'll see developers inside the organization getting to understand the PS3 better and I think that we're getting more power out of PS3 right now." Soderlund told OXM U.K. "I think that we've maxed out the 360 but we haven't maxed out the PS3."

^^Yeah, most of the gamers I've talked to have told me the same thing... thanks for reassuring me. It's too bad that I'm not in the market for a blue-ray disk player, that reason alone would probably convince me to buy a PS3. Since that's not the case, I suppose the Xbox 360 beats out the PS3... even if it doesn't look as sexy.
scully19
For me it comes down to games when getting a system, but that Blu-Ray thing is enticing since it comes with the machine anyways if you like the playstation (which you do). I didn't need one before, but am getting a new 1080p TV right now, and would love to have that capability (though I don't regret my decision, since the games seem to be much better on the xbox).
raptorfanatic
as mentioned before the xbox 360 came out first so the game developers had more time to make games for that system and familorize themselves with it.

also mentioned earlier is the added feature of the blue-ray player which in itself makes the system a no brainer when comparing the two, your basically getting a blue-ray player for free. If you have a HD1080P TV it's the ONLY way to use your TV to it's fullest potential, by using a blue-ray player.

as far as the quantity of games the PS3 is catching up if not caught up by now. As far as the quality of games the PS3's potential can surpass the 360. the 360's potential is maxed at this point.

also mentioned earlier is the added feature of the blue-ray player which in itself makes the system a no brainer when comparing the two,

forgive me, but i think that first part is a little misleading..each individual buyer has individual circumstances when it comes to buying products....i think you first have to ask yourself WHERE you will be using your console
i use mine up in my "office" and is strictly for gaming ( used on a 720p LCD )...downstairs i have a Blu-Ray player (Sony) hooked up to my Plasma which is strictly for tv and movies
so if i'm in Moneyball's shoes, i ask myself where and how i'm going to use the console before i ask which one....then i buy accordingly to whatever suits my needs
the next question i ask is how much i plan on playing online..and what each console offers in that regard...my personal opinion is that the 360 wins hands down in this category..Xbox Live is outstanding and offers so much more than just online gaming..in fact they just recently announced that the 360 is now offering 1080p HD streaming

link

once the library is built up..do you really need a bluray player in your livingroom to watch movies ?

next is what scully has already mentioned...games..graphics are a moot point at this time..both are very, very good and imho there is virtually no difference to the naked eye
as far as choices i'd have to say that the 360 is still ahead in that department...but to be fair it seems that most titles are made for both these days
also want to mention that the 360 offers upgraded software that supports 1080p thru Xbox Live ( i'm not a tekkie by any means so i'm not sure if that is true 1080p or not..someone more knowledgable would have to answer that )

so if i'm starting over i'm looking at a few areas before i decide which way to go

1-where will i be using it
2-what will it be hooked up to
3-what are my online options
4-what are the games i REALLY want to play on it...and does the console have it
5-which controller feels better in my hands

i'm not trying to sound biased or come across as your typical fanboy in any way when i say that i feel the 360 measures up to the PS3 in every category..and exceeds it when it comes to online options (by a country mile)

but again...that's just my opinion

I`ve had my Ps3 for almost a year now and I couldn`t be happier. I just picked up a 42 inch 1080p LCD TV(what a huge difference!) and I probibly use the blue ray disk player as much as i use the console for gaming. Online for me has been hit and miss, NBA2k9 was just TERRIBLE online, Call of Duty on the other hand is fantastic, quick, responsive and fluid. PS3 Online is also free I believe there is a small fee involved in the Xbox 360. the Playstation store offers free demo`s for download, all all sorts of add ons, "themes" etc.

I use the PS3 to video chat with my brother and my friends all over the place, since my brother hooked up online, we`ve gone from maybe 1 20 min phone call a month, to throwing down a few times a week. If your really into playing with people you know, I`d STRONGLY suggest you buy whatever system your buddies get.

As for games, I find there just isn`t much to pick from right now, on either console, Xbox has more games, but a lot of them are crap, and PS3 falls inline with that.(I`m kinda jealous the Wii is putting out an updated Mike Tyson`s Punch out and PS3 isn`t)

All I can say is I bought the PS3 because i went through 3 Xbox`s back in the day and I just sorta gave up on them, I`ve had no issues with PS3.

They are on the 4th version of the system now I believe, and by now it is pretty much not going to fail. What you have to do when purchasing a xbox is look at the back of the box for the manufacturing date and make sure it is a recent date (at least this year, or as close to it as possible). Most big chains have leftover older ones, so you may be buying one now that is still made from a long time ago.

yea SF, getting the same as my buddies has certainly made the difference for me. I am just getting off being off work for 6-7 months with my bad knee and the PS3 kept me entertained the whole time. Back in my home town there is good sized group of guys that have all bought PS3`s and i can`t think of anything thats been able to bridge the distance gap between friends quite like the PS3. `I`m not really the kind of guy to talk on the phone much, i spend a little time on messenger and facebook but its not the same as playing video games with your buddies for 2-3 hours at the end of a day...heck, i even use it to check up on RC when I get bored of whatever game I`m playing.

Call of Duty just released the 2nd map pack including the 3rd installment of "Nazi Zombies". Who ever it was at Treyarch that came up with this mini game really deserves a raise, very "pac man" in its complexity and "astroids" in its addictiveness. This map brings in "hell hounds" which may represent just the expansion that ruins the whole thing. Why must game creators always try to complicate things?
Zombies, trying to get into a house...You, trying to keep them out....GO!

Ok, so I just started playing NBA 2k9 in the association mode and I've got a few questions for whoever can answer them:

1- Potential is obviously valued very highly in this game, but what are the odds that a player fills out that potential? How can you make sure that a player reaches that potential? And when will you see a change in overall rating (in NBA Live the players improve at the end of every season)?

2- I started my season with a max of 10 hours of training for the developement of my players... how do I get more hours? ONE training session can cost me up to 4 hours, so it won't take long before I run out.

3- How do I know how or what to change in order to improve team chemistry? In NBA Live the team chemistry was much more organised imo, I could easily find out what every player liked or disliked about the practice schedule, team success, player chemistry, playing time, and the city they were playing in. Am I missing something here?

4- And what's up with the player ratings? A-, B+ ,C , F-, D+... does the B equal a rating of 80? It it's weird because at one point when I was attempting to trade for a player, all the letters turned in to question marks. How can I change the ratings into numbers (I've seen it done)?

BTW, kudos to 2k9 for having a few metric stats in the game... I wasn't expecting that at all. Also, having the option to pull off a 3 team trade and giving out the free agents options in their contracts (team and player) is a great bonus. The game itslef is much more realistic, NBA live was pushing near arcade.

1-The odds that the player fills out the potential depend on their age, attitude and how much they play. The bigger the role the better they get, and faster too. Yes, their stats do increase at the end of the season.

2-I thought it was only 7 but it replenishes each month.

3-If they like their role and everyone is happy, team success plays a role too. It helps if players attitudes and playing styles match.

4-I dont know their exack values and i never knew you could switch it to numbers.

NBA 2K9 is a great game!

Don't know if you've had these answered or not, but ehre goes:

1. Potential all comes down to the COACHING ratings. Each coach has different strenghts and weaknesses, ie Defense, Shooting, Rebounding, Post, etc. Once your training staff is set, you develop the player(I do this with Marvin Williams a ton). Pick the attributes that benefit the player, with Marvin, since he's a SF and his handles aren't that great, I use some of the training on his dribbling, some on speed, and some on shooting. He starts out at somewhere around 80, and by the end of 2 years, I usually have him somewhere around 90 without playing around with the ratings. He's young, has great potential, and you just gotta' train with them and give them PT. Bargnani's another one that can reach the mid 90's after about 3 seasons. Remember, having good coaching helps out. Also, the ratings go up and down throughout the year, so you should notice that when you check out your lineup/roster.

2. I've got the PS3 version, so I get 7 hours each month. Once the month is over, I get another 7 hours. It doesn't add up if you don't use the hours also, it'll stay at 7 once the new month starts.

3. Team success, playing time and familiarity with the team is important to team chemistry. If you keep trading and signing players, your chemistry will be in the shitter. Nab your players early, develop them and stick with them and win, and your chemistry should be really good.

4. If you want to know the players' ratings instead of just letters, you have to scout them in order to find out how good they are in terms of numbers. I can't remember, but I believe it's in team management or something like that, I haven't played it in a while. You can also scout your own players to see where they're at, but that's kind of pointless since you can just check it in the edit player.

Hopefully this helps.

Okay so I see this thread has no love for the PC gamer... I'm a casual gamer these days and I only play fantasy RPG with 3rd person perspective so my choices are limited but i've played 3 games in the last three years that if you like fantasy RPG's you must play.

In order:

Gothic 3: Most rich and lavish graphics i've ever seen in the fantasy realm...very detailed storylines, solid voice-over work and an amazing soundtrack. It is a solid game if you're a hack 'n slasher like me but has more than enough questing and critical decision-gates to keep anyone hooked. The story is non-linear so you can do things in any order you choose and only with rare exceptions can you mess up one of the main quests accidentally(and when you do, you have the console cheats). In fact the game is so big(almost 200 hours of play if you do everything) you can be fulfilled without completing the main quests...in fact the only letdown in the game for me was the slideshow summary after completing the game. Good replay value. I've played it twice.

There is an expansion pack, Forsaken Gods available now. It's buggy so get it patched to the max but it was cool to wander around the Gothic world again and see things that had changed, meet old familiar characters and find new weapons and loot.

The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion(GOTY Edition): I probably should have played this before Gothic since the graphics aren't quite as good so it felt early on like a step backwards, but after getting into the Shivering Isles expansion and finding a few online mods to improve the textures and graphics this game came alive! With over 225 hours of potential gaming it will keep you interested for months. Mod's really let you bring in the elements to gaming you like personally and they are the strong point of this game. The main story is solid but there are so many quests on the side that you can really build up a strong character. Again, the non-linearness of the story allows you to roam the immense world at your leasure and complete what quests you like. This game has some dark elements that were a nice surprise that allow you to explore the evil side of your nature in the comfort of you own home smile.gif Very fair replay value as well. On my second go 'round now.

The Witcher: Smaller than the first two..only about 80 hours and not as non-linear(but still some freedom). Witcher is more adult and not for the hack 'n slasher but there are so many more elements that drew me in to this game I was quite surprised. For one thing, you can collect 'trophies' of your characters conquests in the various towns and bars smile.gif The dialogue and story is more rich and realistic in this game than any other i've seen. There were moments in the game where i had to literally pause for 5 - 10 minutes to make a decision as to my actions knowing that the consequences would be real and would really shape the story. I've never felt that way before. Most games allow you to choose alliances, but you don't really have much else...this game makes you choose a moral ground and requires you to justify and examine it from different angles throughout the game. The fighting style is a bit more restricted and took a bit to get used to , but once I got the hang of it the experience was amazing. Very solid game...wish it was longer.

I enjoyed this, but the first play time through it didn't immerse me as much as Morrowind GOTY did. Even if the graphics were quite worse, I think it was less repetitive and bland. Also most cliched main story line ever.

Second play time through I decided to get those online mods and the game was much much better. One thing I like about PC gaming, if the community doesn't think the game is good enough they'll improve it themselves.

Perfect place for this, seeing as how it is a basketball site talking about video games, but NBA 2k10 is coming out soon, and as sort of a pre-release, to go along with that game they have released a game called NBA 2k10: Draft combine, that let's you create a player and go through the combine. Once the game comes out you can use this player in the actual game and go through your entire career. Sounds like a pretty cool concept to me.

It’s a great idea: Make a small teaser game for a bigger game, something that’s more meaty than a demo and with interconnectivity for the larger game it supports. We’ve seen it before with games like Fable II Pub Games, where the consequences of your actions can have a direct effect on your experience playing the full game. But NBA 2K10: Draft Combine attempts to do a lot more than that, and succeeds only to varying degrees.

NBA 2K10: Draft Combine is, on the one hand, a great training experience if you’re planning on playing NBA 2K10 when it’s released this October. Not only will it help you brush up your basketball skills, but it will also function as your created-player foundry. Not only can you mold his look and styles to a staggeringly cool extent, you will also use this opportunity to earn real skill points that translate into attributes that he will carry over into your full franchise season in NBA 2K10. If you’re the type of person who’s going to play those career modes in NBA 2K10 religiously, then this little title is a godsend.

I always thought video games are a waste of time and your just wasting your life on them but when I play Madden 10' I feel a rush of adlenine and things go rushing through my head. That is the exact same reason why I started playing basketball in the fast break I feel this rush of adrenaline and its really addicting.

Was reading more about 2k10, and this games sounds amazing for anyone that likes creating a player, and basically lets you be him for the whole game and take him as far as you can. I haven't had an nba game in a while, but I will defenitely be buying this one.

This is just about the new game option called My Player:

My Player

If you don't care about running plays or running your own team as much as you care about creating yourself in the game and what color shoes you're going to wear, then 2K has the mode for you. It's called My Player, and fans who want to get a head start on this mode can actually download 2K's "Draft Combine" game online and jump in over a month before "2K10" even ships.

Basically, you'll create your own baller, decide what type of player he should be, create his look down to the color of his kicks (pink Jordans anyone?), then work your way up through summer league, training camp and the D-League to your shot at earning valuable minutes in the NBA. Play through the "NBA 2K10 Draft Combine" and your player will be better than any you can create through simply purchasing "2K10," and that advantage is definitely worth the five bucks it costs to download the game as the edge in skill points will really pay off down the line.

And what's cool about this mode is, you're not just trying to score 50 points a game to impress the coaches. You are actually graded on how you play with your team, and if the coaches look at you as being a bad teammate (constantly calling for the ball, not passing, not playing D), then you will actually get negative skill points awarded to your character. Definitely not the way you want to start your career.

And the longer you play (you can take your character up to around age 40 before retiring), the harder your goals will become in each game. So while your first objectives might be to set three picks and score four points, you'll eventually be competing for the all-rookie team, to get 25 career triple-doubles, and even to play in 1,000 career games (talk about sore thumbs).

These players can then be taken online as part of 2K's Team Up mode, where up to 50 gamers can form their own crews and challenge to be the best online team around. Crews can design their own jerseys, add logos and even watch the leaderboards to see which of their players stand out as online superstars. As you play online, you'll even continue to earn progression points for your created character so you can constantly improve his game.

waiting for dragon age: origins to come out for pc....it's from the makers of Baldur's Gate, etc...greatest RPG ever. in regards to god of war 3, ps3 came down in price to $299, so might be easier to get for you smile.gif

Anyone else here play the original Uncharted Drakes Fortune. One of the best games for the PS3 and had incredible graphics. It was action-adventure and it was kindof like being Indiana Jones. The sequels coming out on the 16th of October and so far it's getting incredible reviews. Graphically it looks even better and according to IGN may be the best on the system ever. And it's added an awesome multiplayer.

As am I.

To pass the time I picked up Fallout 3 for the pc by Bethesda(makers of Oblivion). I dont' normally leave the fantasy genre and so this is a major leap for me. Overall i'm happy with the game...plays just like Oblivion, similar questing and dialogues. It's non-linear although there are some restrictions as to where you can wander in the game which I dont' like. The modding community has really done a lot for this game as well so there are tons of ways to vary the game based on your preferences. I'd definitely recommend it to rpg players..might be pass for a good first person shooter fan as well given the variety of guns and ammo out there.... afterall you don't ahve to do the quests, you can just kill everything smile.gif

Fallout 3 might be the greatest game of all time. So much fun, so much to do, tons of little things that make it replayable. The level of detail in the game is nuts, and you can really feel what it would be like to be in this post apocalyptic world. I highly recommend it to everyone, not just RPG fans.

How high end of a vid card do you need to run it? Just wondering if a 512MB card is still good enough nowadays.

I have a ATI 3870 and it runs beautifully with everything on max. Compare to that what you have.

Apparently it runs slightly better on the xbox than my pc tho, so if you have the option...

couldn't agree more...haven't played a lot of it myself but have watched hrs and hrs of it because my girlfriend's daughter is addicted to this game

don't forget the dowloadable add-ons after you have completed the game...or if you haven't yet purchased then i suggest you buy the "Game of the Year Edition" which contains all 5 of the DLC's ( you will save yourself approx $50 by doing this )

DLC's are as follows.....

Operation: Anchorage
The Pitt
Broken Steel
Point Lookout
Mothership Zeta

^available for the 360.....not sure what DLC's are available for the PS3 version

Perhaps but you lose modability which I think is a big selling feature no?

I downloaded the NBA 2K10 demo. I'm a huge 2K fan, i've been playing 2k since NBA 2K3.

At first I wasn't too impressed with 2k10. For a minute I actually thought I may be buying live this year.

But today I played it again, Took more time to look for the details. and I got to say.

2K has done it again, another solid ball game.

The best one yet.

I reccomend you guys check it out.

Unfortunately the demo isn't out for PS3 yet, but I have tried live out. I'm impressed they've really stepped it up and created a nice simulation experience. It's still got issues, guys jumping bizarrely high for rebounds but overall a big step forward. Have to see if 2K steps up as well.
